Students were asked to choose their favorite passage from the text. Then during the writing workshop, they were to post their favorite passage and make a connection with media by looking for a picture on-line.

Reading Workshop: Students read independent reading books while teacher conferenced with students on reading grade-level text.

Writing Workshop: Students read personal narrative called "Snapshots." Then we discussed the importance of our leads. Evaluated samples and discussed which one was the best, which one was okay, and which one needed lots of work. Then students reflected on their lead and created or revised the lead for their personal narrative.

In our mini-lesson today we talked about "How do I choose a book?". After our mini-lesson, we went to the library and choose a "just-right" book. We then modeled the reading time for working in the "Reading Zone."

Students shared their photo and its story with their writing group. The students were then asked to write a 50 word caption for the picture in their notebook. They were asked to post their photo with their caption on paper provided by teacher and decorate it. The students viewed the photos and read the captions.

The first full day of school for the 8th grade.

  1. Students completed the reading inventory for the district and the classroom.
  2. They also completed a "What's easy and hard" sheet about reading & writing.
